Uit velen één

Dit historisch beeldverhaal is bedoeld als herinnering aan de grote uittocht der europese volkeren naar amerika die op gang kwam rond 1880.
Toen de hollanders de fundamenten legden voor wat nu als  New York bekend staat,
begonnen ook de eerste europeanen al naar het nieuwe land te trekken.

Door grote armoede en slechte sociale omstandigheden in de negentiende eeuw was het een uitzichtloos bestaan voor veel mensen,aan de andere kant van de oceaan was er echter behoefte aan mensen om het land te ontginnen.
Toen de groter wordende stoomboten het mogelijk maakten om snel en relatief goedkoop de overtocht te maken begon rond 1880  een ware exodeus van europese volkeren die duurde tot eind jaren 20 toen door de beurskrach van 1929 de toevloed van immigranten niet langer nodig was.

Naar schatting hebben 20 miljoen mensen van overal vandaan in die periode de oversteek gemaakt om zich voorgoed te vestigen in hun nieuwe vaderland.

De afgebeelde zeppelin was een deel van de herstelbetalingen die Duitsland na de 1e wereldoorlog aan amerika moest doen,deze werden vaak boven new york gezien in de jaren 20.
Diverse oceaanstomers onderhielden een vaste lijndienst van europa op new york wanneer ze de haven binnen liepen was het Vrijheidsbeeld
voor veel mensen de eerste kennismaking met hun nieuwe vaderland het is hier afgebeeld met een brandende toorts als symbool van de hoop op een beter leven.

This historic picture story is meant as a memorial to the great exodus of the peoples of  Europe to America,set in motion around 1880.
When the dutch laid the foundation of the city that is now known as New York ,the first europeans had also already begun to move to the new country.Due to great poverty and poor social circumstances in the 19th century,it meant a hopeless existence for a lot of people.However,
on the  other side of the ocean,a lot of people were needed to reclaim the land.When the ever larger steamboats made it possible to make the
crossing fast and relatively cheap,around 1880 a real exodus of the peoples of Europe started,wich lasted until the end of the 1920,s when
because of the crash of the stock exchange in 1929,the influx of immigrants was no longer needed.An estimated 20 million people from all over made the crossing in that period,to settle in their new homeland.The pictured zeppelin was part of the reparations which Germany had to make to America after the first world war .The zeppelins were often seen above New York in the 1920,s.
Several ocean liners maintained a regular scheduled service from Europe to New York.When they arrived in the harbour,the statue of liberty was for many people the first introduction to their new homeland.It is pictured here with a burning torch as the symbol of hope for a better life.
